When people try to define courage, they generally land on something like this: “Being able to do what needs to be done in the face of fear, adversity, etc.” If you want to get fancy, you can use something along the line of what Atticus Finch says in Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

“It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.”

Whatever your criteria may be, one little girl — featured in the video below — will exceed your wildest expectations.

When one mother thought it would be funny to prank her little girl by wearing an “IT” clown mask and crawling up behind her, according to The Daily Mail, she got more than she bargained for: a pint-sized warrior making what she probably thought was her last stand.

In the video, the little girl screams in horror, and then turns the table on her tormentor — she strikes at the frightening face, then grabs it and takes her mom down.

She can be heard crying for her mom and is seen trying to pull the mask off the clown. Perhaps she knew her mother was in there; perhaps she was just operating on instinct.

Either way, I wish I had her courage when I was so young. I remember when my mother once scared me as a young child, I plopped down and cried. No heroics there.

If more people had the kind of courage as grown-ups that this girl does as a youngster, the world would be a very different place.

Thankfully, her mother quickly pulled the mask off and reassured her daughter. I hope she was proud of her little girl’s actions in the face of fear — I sure am.
