“Stop the hammering!” That’s just one of MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell’s many complaints as leaked footage shows the star launching a bizarre, profanity-laced tirade during commercial and on-air breaks in a newscast late last month.
In the leaked outtake footage recorded Aug. 29 and published by Mediaite on Wednesday, O’Donnell was clearly reporting on President Donald Trump’s visit to Texas after Hurricane Harvey ravaged the area. However, O’Donnell wasn’t focused on the news of the day.
Instead, he looked visibly annoyed, and the second he knew he was off air he snapped: “Someone in that control room is out of control.”
“What’s going on, why am I losing this, why don’t I have sound?” he continued, getting more tense by the minute. “Who’s asking for a Labor Day rundown in my ear?”
“Stop the hammering up there!” O’Donnell yelled angrily. “Who’s got a hammer? Where is it? Where’s the hammer?”
“Go up on the other floor,” he continued. “Somebody go up there and stop the hammering. Stop the hammering. I’ll go down to the g*d***** floor myself and stop it, keep the g*d***** commercial break going. Call (MSNBC President) f****** Phil Griffin, I don’t care who the f*** you have to call. Stop the hammering.”
“Empty out the g*d***** control room and find out where this is going on.”
O’Donnell is part of a very select group of people that represents the face of the network. The craziest part of all is that he couldn’t even keep his temper under control for one minute to focus on his job and represent his company well. The moment is already drawing comparison’s to former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly’s famous “We’ll do it live” outburst when he was with “Inside Edition.”
After Mediaite published the outburst, O’Donnell posted an apology of sorts on Twitter:
It said: “A better anchorman and a better person would’ve had a better reaction to technical difficulties. I’m sorry.”
Mediaite, which generally takes a political line almost as liberal as MSNBC, did not say how it obtained the footage, or whether outbursts like this were a normal part of O’Donnell’s work routine.
But it did offer one piece of advice at the end of the post that bears repeating:
“Once more a critical reminder for all television personalities — the camera is always on.”
O’Donnell should remember that one for a while.
