The NFL could learn a few things from Buzz Williams. While countless professional players protest the national anthem and refuse to respect the American flag, the coach of the Virginia Tech basketball team has a very different message: Stand — and know why you’re standing.
A viral video of the Virginia State Hokies meeting American veterans was posted last year, but is getting renewed attention in light of the growing drama at the NFL.
Coach Williams invited armed forces service members to come to his team’s sports arena, and had a talk with his players that should be required viewing for every league.
“Your talent didn’t earn those chairs. How tall you are and how fast you run, how well you shoot, didn’t earn those chairs,” Williams said, referring to the players’ benches.
With military veterans of many races and backgrounds lined up facing the team, the coach made one thing clear to his players.
“These guys, when they were your age, interrupted their life. They paused their education. They changed their career. And they gave their life for those chairs. Do you guys understand what I’m saying? Not us, not us,” he explained.
“And so when the anthem is played, we’re going to stand like grown men, and we’re going to honor men like this that gave their life so we can have a chair to sit in.”
Williams explained that the least his players could do is respect the country and its flag for a few minutes.
“And then the two-and-a-half minutes that the song is played, or somebody sings it, we’re going to stand at attention and honor these men,” he declared.
“We’re not going to sway back and forth. We’re not messing with our shorts, we’re not messing with our jersey. Those two-and-a-half minutes, we’re going to give to the people who earned these chairs, because that freedom allows us to do what we’re doing.”
It’s the height of arrogance for multi-millionaire athletes to make “The Star Spangled Banner” — both the song and the actual flag — about themselves.
By failing to take two minutes to honor Americans who fought and died for the ideals of the nation, spoiled players like Colin Kaepernick and now many others are showing that they don’t deserve the nation’s respect… and they could learn a lot from coach Williams and these veterans.
