The way President Donald Trump bluntly responded Tuesday morning to a suspected terror attack that occurred the night before in Manchester held nothing in common with how former President Barack Hussein Obama reacted to terrorism during his presidency.
Speaking in Bethlehem as part of his 9-day overseas tour, the president excoriated the then-unidentified perpetrators of the attack as “evil losers.”
“So many young, beautiful, innocent people living and enjoying their lives murdered by evil losers in life,” he said. “I won’t call them monsters, because they would like that term. They would think that’s a great name. I will call them, from now on, losers, because that’s what they are — they’re losers.”
Listen to his words below:
It was later learned the attack had been perpetrated by Salman Ramadan Abedi, a British man of Libyan descent described by his family as a devout Muslim, according to the Financial Times. This devout Muslim and suspected Islamic terrorist killed at least 22 people, including young children, and injured another 59 minimum.
Now think back to June of 2016, when radical Islamic terrorist Omar Mateen opened fire at a gay nightclub in Orlando, killing 49 people and injuring another 53. That same evening then-President Obama delivered a lengthy speech that sounded more like a police report than anything else.
“We are still learning all the facts,” he said. “This is an open investigation … What is clear is that he was a person filled with hatred. Over the coming days, we’ll uncover why and how this happened, and we will go wherever the facts lead us.”
He later pivoted to gun control, claiming that the attack was “a further reminder of how easy it is for someone to get their hands on a weapon that lets them shoot people,” according to a transcript from the Los Angeles Times.
You can watch his full speech below (if you can stand it):
The entire speech certainly wasn’t horrible, as he said some touching things about the victims. But in regard to the suspected perpetrators of the attack, who at the time hadn’t been identified, his speech was severely lacking — particularly in comparison to what Trump said.
The current president resolutely labeled the perpetrators — of course, it was later learned that there was only one suspect — as “evil losers.”
While liberals view this sort of rhetoric as childish, conservatives recognize that part of winning the war on radical Islam requires making sure that terrorists are “scorned, derided, mocked, and treated as small,” as noted by The Daily Wire. And that’s exactly what Donald Trump accomplished but Barack Obama never did.
