Verizon Wireless has announced a massive data leak of customers’ private information, putting millions of Verizon users at risk.
An estimated 14 million Verizon customers’ information could have been leaked. Private information such as names, address, account details and personal ID numbers were left unprotected and available to anyone seeking that info.

The lack of security was reported on June 8 and wasn’t corrected until June 22.
That’s not to say that the leak lasted just two weeks. It’s unclear how long protected information was compromised.

Protected information was available, according to The Hill to “anyone who knew where to look,” and the high risk lack of protection might have gone unnoticed if not for the “cyber resilience” of UpGuard.
Faith Family America continues:
According to The Hill, Chris Vickery of UpGuard reported the breach after he discovered a database of Verizon customers on a cloud server account of a Verizon subcontractor in a way that could be accessed by anyone who knew where to look for it.
[…] The firm that first notified Verizon, UpGuard, said that “the prospect of a host of your applications and digital accounts being compromised from one third-party vendor’s exposure of data is not science fiction, but the unfortunate reality of cyber risk today,” the report concluded.
Regardless of whether a third party’s cloud server issue is to blame, Verizon still took two weeks to fix the problem, and that’s remarkable considering that private information of some 14 million people remained at risk during that period.
If you use Verizon, you might to keep a close eye on your accounts, and watch for any unauthorized use of your private info.
