U.S. Army Gen. Vincent Brooks made it crystal clear that the United States is prepared to respond to quickly to any serious threat posed by North Korea.
In an exclusive interview with CBS News, Brooks, who has commanded U.S. forces fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, said everything hinged on how North Korea decides to act.
Brooks said that North Korea is responsible for the direction that the region is going and the instability it has caused.
“It has to take responsibility for that and stop,” the general added.
“If North Korea uses nuclear weapons, it will be met with an effective and overwhelming response. Now they can take it to the bank. We make that same point to our allies and partners, like the Republic of Korea and like Japan,” the general told CBS.
Brooks’ comments echo those of Secretary of Defense James Mattis, who said last month that a military solution to the North Korean crisis would be “tragic on an unbelievable scale.”
Those words shouldn’t be taken lightly, but North Korea’s dictator, Kim Jung Un, does not appear to be taking them seriously. In fact, his actions indicate he doesn’t believe the U.S. will follow through with its threat.
CBS reported that Kim is perceived as a global threat, adding that U.S. intelligence estimated the rogue nation had at least 10 nuclear weapons.
Moreover, recent reports from North Korea’s state media said the nation is “not far away” from testing an intercontinental ballistic missile.
Kim is playing a dangerous game, and he should realize that a U.S. response to any threat would be devastating for his country — and for him, personally.
