It’s a situation every parent fears: While children sleep peacefully in their beds, violent men break into the house. What happens next?

That nightmare scenario became all too real for one family in Texas this month. The horror started around 4 a.m. at a house in Houston when four armed men broke in, violently assaulted the adults and tied up everybody in the home.

“I didn’t know what was happening until I saw a man holding a gun to my mom’s head,” 19-year-old Ruben Garcia told KPRC. Garcia was sleeping in his room when screaming and shouting woke him up.

Garcia and his twin brother, Rene, tried to lock themselves in their bedroom, but the home invaders threatened to kill their family members if they didn’t open the door, KVUE reported.

“They had my little sister at gunpoint, so we couldn’t do anything,” Rene Garcia explained.

Before the young men knew what was happening, the attackers forced them from the bedroom. They used shoe laces to restrain Ruben and Rene, their parents, and sister.

According to KVUE, Ruben and Rene Garcia’s uncle, who lives next door, heard the commotion. He took a gun to investigate, and found a suspect beating one of the family members in the yard.

That’s when the uncle fired. The criminal was wounded, but the three others were still nearby.

A second thug pointed a pistol at the neighbor, forcing the citizen to fire again. The home invader didn’t survive.

“If he didn’t save us, I think most likely one of us, we wouldn’t be here today,” Rene Garcia told KPRC.

Police stated that two of the four thugs managed to escape. The family reported that the criminals spoke English and Spanish with a Central American accent.

The uncle’s actions have been referred to a grand jury for review, but no charges have been filed.

But the episode is just another reminder that nothing stops a bad guy with a gun, like a good guy with a gun.
