After the initial surprise of President Donald Trump’s Wednesday announcement of a ban on transgender service in the military settled in, some people began to wonder if there was some sort of ulterior motive behind the timing of the proclamation.
Recall that just days prior, on Monday, Democrat congressional leaders gathered together to announce their new partnership with their “new” economic policy and slogan, “A Better Deal: Better Jobs, Better Wages, Better Future,” a policy that has been panned as “more of the same” and not progressive enough by the far-left, like in this op-ed for CNN.
But it was that Democrat pivot to economic policies that some believe was the impetus for Trump’s sudden and unexpected reversal of former President Barack Obama’s military transgender policy, according to Jonathan Swan of Axios.
Swan quoted an unnamed Trump administration official as saying: “This forces Democrats in Rust Belt states like Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin, to take complete ownership of this issue. How will the blue collar voters in these states respond when senators up for re-election in 2018 like Debbie Stabenow are forced to make their opposition to this a key plank of their campaigns?”

Swan himself framed the announcement as an “aggressive” and “polarizing” move into the “culture wars” on the part of Trump that would thrill the social conservatives of his base, though he wondered how the inevitable backlash from liberals would affect socially moderate Republicans and fundraising from the donor class.
The Washington Post found the whole thing quite cynical, particularly the above quote, and approached another unnamed White House official for reaction, who initially stated, “When I read that, I was like, what’s wrong with whoever you are? This was not a political decision. It was a military readiness and military resource decision.”
“It will be fun to watch some of them (Democrats) have to defend this, but that was never an impetus,” the official quickly added.
The Post piece seemed to suggest that the entire thing was little more than a political ploy, if not a move made out of desperation, to rally Trump’s base and take Democrats and the media off their message.
Likewise, so did Commentary’s Noah Rothman, who cynically suggested another political bomb could soon be thrown in the “culture wars” by Trump to distract from the Russia investigation or his poll numbers, in this case making English the official language of the United States.
When the going gets real tough, Trump is going to break the glass on the “English as the official language” debate and set the place on fire

Whether the announcement of a return to the old standard military policy barring open transgender service was a thoughtful move or purely political gambit may never be fully known, but what is perfectly clear is that Democrats and the media have once again been thrown off their new economic game by it and forced to return to the progressive identity politics that have failed them so badly … that I can tell you.
