If there’s one group of fighters who are truly capable of helping us defeat the Islamic State group, it’s the Kurds — a fact President Donald Trump obviously appreciates, as he recently approved a plan to assist their efforts.
Under the approved plan, the United States will send “medium-size weaponry” to Syrian Kurds for the purpose of retaking Raqqa from the Islamic State, according to USA Today.
The capture of Raqqa, the de-facto capital of the radical Islamists’ self-proclaimed caliphate, would bring us that much closer to obliterating the Islamic State group.
The Kurds have been among the most effective and reliable ground forces since the U.S.-led international coalition launched its air war against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria in 2014.
Thus American military commanders have long argued on behalf of arming the Kurdish fighters.
In fact, the Kurds have already proven their capability in getting to grips with the Islamic State group, as they recently captured a key Syrian town and a nearby dam from the militant group.
Their capture of Tabqa and Syria’s largest dam undermined the radical organization’s ability to defend Raqqa and disrupted its ability to plan attacks in Western countries, the U.S.-led international coalition against the Islamic State group explained, according to The Associated Press.
In fact, this major victory set the stage for an advance on the de facto capital, which sits just 25 miles to the east. Now, with the help of American arms, the capture of Raqqa by Kurdish forces is likely only a matter of time.
Dana W. White, the chief Pentagon spokeswoman, said in a statement that arming the Kurds was necessary to ensure that Raqqa could be taken “in the near future,” according to The New York Times.
“(T)he president authorized the Department of Defense to equip Kurdish elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces as necessary to ensure a clear victory over ISIS in Raqqa, Syria,” she said.
Thank you, President Trump, for making this happen!
