Steve Bannon may have cleared out his desk at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., but that doesn’t mean he’s left the public eye.
In an appearance on Fox News on Monday, Bannon suggested that anthem protesters take a knee for a different reason — namely, to thank God that Hillary Clinton isn’t ensconced in the Oval Office.
“If people in this country take a knee and the National Football League players want to take a knee, they should take a knee at night, every night, and thank God in heaven Donald J. Trump is president of the United States,” Bannon said, according to the Washington Examiner.
“He has saved this country so much grief. He has done such a tremendous job with virtually no help.”

While Bannon and Trump have politically diverged as of late — most notably in the GOP Senate primary in Alabama, where Bannon’s vigorous support for anti-establishment candidate Roy Moore was seen as a direct challenge to the president, who supported Moore’s opponent — Monday’s comments were the clearest indication that the Breitbart News chairman remains in the president’s corner.
However, Bannon had always indicated that his departure from the White House wouldn’t spark an ideological conflict with Trump and his allies.
“If there’s any confusion out there, let me clear it up: I’m leaving the White House and going to war for Trump against his opponents — on Capitol Hill, in the media, and in corporate America,” Bannon told Bloomberg after he left the White House in August.
As “going to war” for the president goes, you can’t get a whole lot more explicit than telling the NFL players they ought to stop taking a knee for “The Star-Spangled Banner” and start taking a knee to thank God Hillary Clinton isn’t in the White House.
If these ridiculous anthem protesters are actually willing to take a knee to disrespect the flag and anthem just because of their animus toward the president, that shows just how out of touch they are. Sure, he’s going to catch a lot of flak for saying this, but he’s certainly got the right idea.
Bannon’s back and more controversial than ever, it seems — and that’s just the way he likes it.
