A memorial to Kate Steinle, a 32-year-old Bay Area woman who was shot and killed during her walk with her father, has been removed by the city of San Francisco.

Thursday the jury found Jose Ines Garcia Zarate not guilty of murder and involuntary manslaughter in Steinle’s killing. The jury only found him guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Garcia is a seven-time felon who was deported five times and was illegally in the U.S.

People brought cards, candles, flowers and other items to the Steinle memorial, which sprang up around a bench that was put there in her honor.

But now, the memorial has been removed.

And most shocking is who is asking for its removal

Steinle’s parents asked for the memorial to be removed. San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee’s spokeswoman Deirdre Hussey stated:

“The Steinle family placed a request with the Mayor’s Office for the bench to remain as it was intended — a simple memorial in recognition of Kate and her spirit.”

But the reason is not just because the family wants Steinle’s bench to be bare.

The reason is that a self-described “alt-right” group was responsible for creating the shrine.

Around 50 candles, along with red and white roses, were noticed Friday around the bench, after the end of the trial where her alleged shooter was found not guilty.

The memorial was created by a self-proclaimed “alt-right” group.

The political group Identity Evropa hung a poster and lit candles at her bench:

The notes on the poster said, “build the wall” and Steinle’s death “will be avenged.”

“Lucid Hurricane” believed the reason for removing the memorial was a political one:

“Top Blog Sites” thought it was weird to remove the memorial no matter who put it up:

Officials stated that the memorial was violating city policy. San Francisco usually removes memorials within 10 days of the victims’ funeral service, Steinle’s funeral occurred in 2015.

The group who created the memorial also called for a boycott of the city of San Francisco.
