House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was released from the Intensive Care Unit at MedStar Washington Hospital nearly a week after being returned to the unit due to the contraction of an infection.
Scalise, R-La., has been treated at MedStar Washington since June 14, when he was shot during a practice for a charity congressional baseball game, and remains in serious condition.
Prior to being returned to the ICU on July 5, Scalise’s condition had been upgraded to fair.
Upon his initial move out of the ICU in late June, the hospital said Scalise was “beginning an extended period of healing and rehabilitation.”
MedStar Washington Hospital released a statement on behalf of the Scalise family following his most recent surgery July 6.
“Congressman Steve Scalise underwent surgery for the management of infection. He tolerated the procedure well,” the statement read. “He remains in serious condition. We will provide updates as appropriate.”
Scalise continues to fight the infection and is being treated with antibiotics. Once the infection is successfully treated, doctors will discuss plans to move Scalise to an inpatient rehabilitation facility.
Scalise was wounded when gunman James Hodgkinson opened fire at a Republican congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Va.
Hodgkinson was later fatally shot by police.
According to Dr. Jack Sava, the director of trauma at MedStar Washington Hospital, Scalise sustained a trans-pelvic gunshot wound which substantially damaged his bones, internal organs and blood vessels.
In recognition of Scalise, the official photograph of members of the 115th Congress has been delayed until Scalise is well enough to appear with the legislators. House Administration Committee Chairman Gregg Harper, a Republican, and Rep. Robert Brady, the committee’s ranking Democrat, sent an email to members of the House Tuesday, notifying them of the postponement.
“The decision was made to wait until Whip Scalise is able to be present,” Erin McCracken, a committee spokeswoman, told CNN.
The photograph of the 115th Congress was originally scheduled for July 18. According to the email from the committee, they will “send out a notification when a new date and time is scheduled.”
