A conservative news site claims that President Donald Trump intends to replace White House press secretary Sean Spicer with deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
“Sarah Huckabee Sanders, daughter of former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, will be taking over for current White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, a source close to Spicer confirmed to the Gateway Pundit recently,” reported Lucian Wintrich of The Gateway Pundit.
While this is certainly possible — Huckabee Sanders has filled in admirably for Spicer in the White House hot seat — this story needs to be taken with a grain of salt until corroborating evidence surfaces, especially given that the White House itself has yet to comment on it.
With that said, it is possible for a number of valid reasons.
For one, Spicer briefly disappeared in May for a few days during which time Sanders took over his role, thus fueling speculation that the president intended to permanently install her in the press secretary’s position.
According to The Washington Post, the speculation was partly fueled by “Sanders’s relative poise at the podium.”
“Sanders seems to be better than Spicer at keeping her cool, maintaining composure and at least giving an answer and not seeming quite so flustered,” a writer for the paper added in the comparison video below:
It was later learned that Sanders had merely been filling in for Spicer as he fulfilled his U.S. Navy Reserve duties. That didn’t put a stop to the speculation, let alone the comparisons.
“Sanders isn’t a soft pushover, and she can hold her own — as evidenced by her approach to Thursday’s briefing,” New York Post columnist Kaitlyn Schallhorn opined in a post published May 13. “Sanders often sighed and lamented that she had to repeat herself, answering reporters’ questions regarding Comey’s firing with, ‘I think I’ve already answered this.’”
Schalhorn was referring to the unexpected termination a couple days earlier of former FBI Director James Comey.
“Spicer, a commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve, is reported to be up for a promotion to a different communications role within the White House once Sanders fills his slot,” Wintrich added in his report for the Pundit. “The change in roles for Spicer comes at a time when internal leaks have reached a peak.”
Again, these are just rumors. But given Sanders’ exemplary performance filling in for Spicer last month, they may very well be legitimate.
