Republicans in Congress are gearing up for an epic fight in the coming weeks over President Donald Trump’s border wall. Republicans have vowed to include money for the wall in the 2018 budget — and Democrats have promised to move heaven and earth to stop it.
The Trump administration has continued to be vague on how the wall will be funded. It appears American taxpayers will foot the bill, but Trump has insisted that somehow Mexico will pay for the wall in the end.
Iowa Rep. Steve King has come forward with a unique idea on how to fund the border wall. King wants to strip money from Planned Parenthood and food stamps in order to pay for the wall, Yahoo reported.
“I’d throw another $5 billion on the pile, and I would find a half of a billion dollars of that right out of Planned Parenthood’s budget, and the rest of it could come out of food stamps and the entitlements that are being spread out for people that haven’t worked in three generations,” King explained during an interview with CNN.
Liberals will probably faint at that proposal. Even the suggestion of reforming an entitlement program is enough to get them to scream bloody murder these days.
While the idea of stripping money from Planned Parenthood has been popular in conservative circles for years, it is unclear how many Republicans would be willing to also gouge out the food stamps program to pay for a wall.
King didn’t seem to have an qualms about cutting food stamps. In fact, he suggested that building the wall would help people on food stamps by creating new jobs.
“For a couple of reasons — one of ’em would be that, you know, we will create the kind the security that would bring about 10 million new jobs in America just by enforcing immigration law,” he explained when asked why he wouldn’t feel sorry for cutting food stamps.
“Second thing is, I wouldn’t impose anything more strict on anybody in America than what Michelle Obama did with her school lunch program,” he added.

While King’s proposal may never actually see the light of day on any formal legislation, he has raised an interesting idea. There most certainly is enough money that is currently being wasted by the federal government now that could be used to pay for the wall.
Hopefully Republicans will be able to find places in the government where they can take money from a useless program and put it toward the wall.
If Americans are going to have to foot the bill for this wall upfront, the least Congress can do is make sure our money is being spent wisely.
