In an op-ed for PJ Media, a top conservative economist revealed that a ranking Republican diplomat called Democrat actions against President Donald Trump a “coup” during an off-the-record meeting this week.

In the Thursday piece, David P. Goldman — perhaps most famous for a series of essays contributed to the Asia Times under the alias “Spengler” — said that it had been claimed Democrats were trying to recruit Republicans to agree Donald Trump was unfit for office.

“A ranking Republican statesman this week told an off-the-record gathering that a ‘coup’ attempt was in progress against President Donald Trump, with collusion between the largely Democratic media and Trump’s numerous enemies in the Republican Party.

“The object of the coup, the Republican leader added, was not impeachment, but the recruitment of a critical mass of Republican senators and congressmen to the claim that Trump was ‘unfit’ for office and to force his resignation,” the piece continued.

If this sounds like mere conspiracy theorizing that ought to have Alex Jones‘ high-octane screeching behind it, think again. In fact, several Democrat lawmakers have been pressing a bill “clarifying” the 25th Amendment to make the president’s removal due to incapacity contingent on a council of former presidents and vice presidents declaring him unfit.

“I think it is a legitimate issue to raise. I am not a mental health professional, so I don’t know in terms of any sort of medical expertise on this,” said California Democrat Rep. Ted Lieu, who may not be a doctor but is more than happy to play one on TV.

“But I do see and hear the same things that other people see and hear, and a lot of people have concluded that what’s going on is not normal. So what do I do with that as a member of Congress?” Lieu said, according to The Hill.

Peterson said that while he didn’t think impeachment would be on the offering, he thought the “likely outcome will be a prolonged dirty war of words that will delay Trump’s domestic agenda and tie down his loyalists with the chores of fire-fighting.”

That could be enough to cause trouble, though — and it’s something Republicans should fight.
