In the New York government’s apparent attempt to prove they have a greater desire to serve prisoners than law-abiding residents, every prisoner in the New York prison system will be receiving a free tablet.

According to WKBW, the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision and JPay, a company that specializes in inmate and corrections-related services, are partnering together to ensure each inmate in the state prison system receives a tablet that is primarily intended to be used with educational material or to file grievances, but they will also reportedly have the potential to handle commissary transactions as well as entertainment purchases.

JPay isn’t doing this from the collective good of their hearts, either.

According to WKBW, inmates will be able to purchase e-books, music, videos, and other entertainment using the tablets, and that’s how JPay will make their cash.

There will also be controlled kiosks where inmates can send emails to an approved list of recipients.

In other words, JPay is making it a whole lot more pleasant to be a prisoner, and New York is helping them do it.

Listen. I understand the desire to ensure that inmates have the chance to pick up job skills so that they have viability in the work force upon release.

It’s a small step to take that helps people who want to help themselves.

An education is important, no matter who you are.

However, I would like to pose this question to those who made the decision to pass out tablets to every inmate in the state of New York:

Have you ever heard of books?

There is more current, viable, and handy educational material in print than any one man or woman can read and metabolize in their lifetime.

There is no need for tablets for prisoners.

Put books in their hands and instructors who can assist large numbers of inmates at a time — it’s far more reasonable, and just as useful.

New York government never ceases to amaze. Let’s keep prisons a place prisoners actually want to avoid.

Prison is for punishment, not entertainment.
