President Donald J. Trump told journalists that he is very serious about planning to place solar panels all over the wall on the southern US border — a plan drafted by the president as in order to facilitate the way for the project’s payment.
Journalists asked the President about this project Wednesday night when they were aboard on the Air Force One traveling to Paris. Trump was asked if the plans for solar panels to be put all over the wall were a joke, but he answered plain and simple: “No, not joking, no.”
He said that there is a possibility of building a solar wall and that some big firms are observing this chance. He also mentioned that Mexico border is a perfect place for this solar project and that there is a great possibility for its construction, which would look nice.
The President has mentioned this plan before, and it looks like he is supported by some Congress officials and, as well as it has been put on the table by some companies. In June, the President has come up with the idea and told it to the lawmakers from the Republican party as an easy way for the project’s payment, and it seemed to be greatly accepted by part of the Republican caucus’s fiscal hawks.
“I think it’s innovative,” Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who is the House Majority Leader stated for the Wall Street Journal. “To authorize it and to appropriate it wouldn’t cost as much.”
Steve Scalise (R-LA), a House Majority Whip has told the Journal that the president has been searching for many options and possibilities and this idea came up straight and it seems like it has a real promise.
Thomas Gleason who is a Las Vegas contractor in April stated for the NBC’s local affiliate about his firm’s plan for using solar panels for covering the wall— and even the federal government received a formal proposal submitted by him. Gleason concluded that the wall should be very beneficial as well because it would be almost impossible for the illegal immigrants to be able to climb it.
He added that this would be very hard as there would be no place to grab, no holes or any gap that would allow someone to climb it.
Democratic party, however, will not support something like this proposal. “The president is still pushing this medieval proposal, now with an absurd twist,” Chuck Schumer, the Senate Democratic Leader said that Trump is still full of vigor for this proposal which he is comparing it to painting a pony with stripes and calling it a zebra.
Other possible uses have included a tourist attraction a storage for nuclear waste, but the Associated Press has reported that Gleason’s proposal included the idea that sales of electricity could cover the cost of construction in 20 years or less, and power could also be sold to Mexico.
The President told reporters Thursday they were thinking of “some incredible designs,” and what he called a “solar wall” was a very real possibility, and that the whole border will not need a wall. He went on to say:
But we are seriously looking at a solar wall. And remember this, it’s a 2,000-mile border, but you don’t need 2,000 miles of a wall because you have a lot of natural barriers. You have mountains. You have some rivers that are violent and vicious. You have some areas that are so far away that you don’t really have people crossing. So you don’t need that. But you’ll need anywhere from 700 to 900 miles.
He also told journalists that there was a slight progress made on the wall, as his administration is fixing parts of the wall already in existence.
“We are using a wall that was good but it is in very bad shape, and we are not building it anew. We are somewhat repairing it,” he said. “It has already started.”
