Pics Reveal Aftermath of Soviet Famine

Radical leftists often talk about communism and capitalism as if they are abstract terms. From W. E. B. Du Bois to Bernie Sanders, socialists act as if their ideas are fresh and have never been tried before. “Just give it a shot,” the mantra seems to be. “What’s the worst that could happen?”

It turns out that the worst side of socialism is far beyond the darkest human nightmare. It’s one thing to read about the horrors that occur when the free market is removed. It’s something else entirely to see them with your own eyes.

A collection of images put together by the U.K. Daily Mail is intended to do exactly that: Show people the true dark side of socialism. In a series of shocking historical photos, the piece reveals the starvation of men, women and children during a man-made famine in 1920s communist Russia.

“More than five million people died during the catastrophe, which began in 1921 and lasted through 1922,” explained the Daily Mail.

“Russian communist revolutionary Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, better known as Lenin, had been in charge of the country since 1917. In a chilling disregard for the suffering of his fellow countrymen he instructed food to be seized from the poor,” continued the paper.

Leftists may quibble over the difference between communism and socialism, but it’s clear that Lenin viewed them as closely linked. “The goal of socialism is communism,” he allegedly once declared.

Instead of glorious communism, Russia turned to another c-word: cannibalism.

“Russian academics have previously researched and cataloged examples of cannibalism and corpse eating and in one account described how a woman refused to give over her husband’s dead body because she was using it for meat,” the Daily Mail grimly explained. “The starving peasants were even seen digging up recently buried corpses to retrieve their flesh, as well as eating grass and animals that were previously considered pets.”

Because of the distressing (and in some cases, extremely graphic) nature of the photographs, we have not included them in this story, but you can view the gallery at the Daily Mail here.

It was not until free market countries such as the United States were finally permitted to help that the situation improved.

“The American Relief Administration, who were told they could not help in 1919, were granted access to the sick and starving in 1921 and provided great relief along with European aid agencies such as Save The Children,” the newspaper stated.

It has been said that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. Americans would be wise to remember the consequences of socialism and communism, in all their horrific but true details.
