Frank Giaccio, 11, has become a bit of an overnight sensation. After the young entrepreneur wrote a letter to President Donald Trump and offered to mow the White House lawn, the commander in chief took him up on his offer — and Frank quickly became a symbol of hard work and opportunity in America.
Now, the young businessman has revealed that he previously sent a similar letter to Barack Obama, but the last president had a very different reaction to the request.
“It would be my honor to mow the White House lawn some weekend for you,” the boy wrote in a letter to President Trump. “Even though I’m only ten, I would like to show the nation what young people like me are ready for. I admire your business background and have started my own business.”
During a nervous but endearing interview with “Fox & Friends,” the admirably-dubbed “lawnmower boy” explained that when he made the same request to President Obama, his offer wasn’t taken seriously.
“Well, my last (letter), which went to President Obama, I got a letter back. But I knew it wasn’t handwritten, so I knew that this one was actually better,” Frank explained.
The first letter was most likely a generic “thank you” letter generated by Obama’s staff. In contrast, Trump ended up reading the boy’s letter personally, and gave him the business opportunity of a lifetime by asking Frank to come mow the White House lawn.
“On behalf of [first lady] Melania & myself, THANK YOU for doing a GREAT job this morning!” Donald Trump wrote to the boy on Twitter. The president also talked with the intrepid worker on the White House grounds, and during a personal tour of the Oval Office.
To be fair, Obama’s office reportedly received a staggering amount of mail and it is simply not practical to personally respond to every letter.
“Tens of thousands of letters, faxes, and emails from Americans across the country arrive each day at my office, the Office of Presidential Correspondence,” explained White House staff member Mike Kelleher in 2009.
With that said, the fact that Trump and his team responded to Frank Giaccio’s offer the way they did speaks volumes.
Obama’s staff saw an enterprising young man and sent a letter. Trump saw the same person and sent an opportunity. That dramatic difference reflects the views that each president holds about the value of entrepreneurship and hard work.
It is the difference between dismissively patting a young man on the head, and looking him in the eye to take him and his work ethic seriously.
Trump promised to make America great again — and if people like Frank are any indication, the country is absolutely ready to get to work.
