Over the past few years, liberals across America have attacked police officers over the actions of a few. Perhaps in no place else have police been vilified by their own government more than in New York City.
Liberal Mayor Bill de Blasio has been particularly nasty towards the New York City Police Department, and now the NYPD police union is fighting back, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association is targeting a large number of City Council races in the hopes of shifting the 51-member body away from its leftist tendencies.
The PBA is planning to endorse about a dozen candidates for City Council. The hope is that if these candidates win, the council will no longer simply push through anti-police legislation that is supported by de Blasio.
“We need to have a City Council that will speak up, defend New York City police officers, and dig into the issues so that they understand them,” Patrick Lynch, president of the PBA, told The Journal.
“We also need them to stand up to the (de Blasio) administration and speak up on behalf of police officers as allies,” he added.
It is unclear just how successful this campaign will be, but it shows you how serious the PBA is to about taking on de Blasio’s hatred of police officers.
“We’ve changed the city, we’re keeping the city in good shape, and then we don’t get the support that we need,” Lynch told The Journal, summing up the problem the NYPD is facing today under de Blasio.
De Blasio himself is up for re-election in the fall, but it is doubtful that he will lose. There isn’t a strong challenger in the race against him, and New York City’s liberal tendencies will probably ensure he stays in power.
The PBA probably has made this same assumption, which is why it is targeting the City Council. Tipping the scales for a few City Council spots would be much easier than trying to tip the scales of a mayoral race.
The PBA is a very powerful political force in New York City. Hopefully, it will be able to exert its influence over these City Council races and limit the power of de Blasio in his war against the police.
