In remarks that could indicate total war with North Korea is closer than many had believed, U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley said the United Nations had “exhausted” options on North Korea and that the next step may involve handing the issue over to the Pentagon.
Haley made the remarks on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday, when asked if President Donald Trump’s “fire and fury” remark was just an empty threat after the latest North Korean missile launch.
“What we were doing was being responsible. Where North Korea is being irresponsible and reckless, we were being responsible by trying to use every diplomatic possibility that we could possibly do,” Haley said. “We have pretty much exhausted all the things that we could do at the Security Council at this point.
“Now, I said yesterday I am perfectly happy kicking this over to (Secretary of Defense) Mattis, because he has plenty of military options,” she added.
“So, I think that the fire and fury, while he says this is what we can do to North Korea, we wanted to be responsible and go through all diplomatic means to get their attention first. If that doesn’t work, General Mattis will take care of it.”
As Reuters notes, Haley’s remarks came just before the United Nations General Assembly in New York, adding a new wrinkle to the annual autumnal meeting of world leaders and other sundry tinpot dictators. The Security Council recently banned Pyongyang’s textile exports and crude oil imports in response to their recent nuclear test. North Korea’s response to that was to fire (another) missile test over Japan.
If Kim Jong Un thinks this is a game, he’s about to be disabused of that notion in a major way — even if it means total war.
“I think we all know that, basically, if North Korea keeps on with this reckless behavior, if the United States has to defend itself or defend its allies in any way, North Korea will be destroyed. And we all know that. And none of us want that. None of us want war,” Haley said.
“But we also have to look at the fact that you are dealing with someone who is being reckless, irresponsible and is continuing to give threats not only to the United States, but to all of their allies. So something is going to have to be done.”
