Along the sidelines of the G-20 economic summit in Hamburg, Germany on Friday, President Donald Trump and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto sat down together for the first time to hold a bilateral meeting.
After their discussion, one reporter shouted out a question about whether Trump still sought to have Mexico pay for his proposed border wall between the two nations, according to Townhall.
“Mr. Trump, do you still want Mexico to pay for the wall?” a reporter shouted amidst the constant cacophony of camera shutters snapping.
Seemingly without skipping a beat, and with the Mexican president still seated right beside him, Trump replied with a grin, “Absolutely.”

The border wall was purportedly not part of the discussion between the two leaders, with the conversation reportedly remaining focused largely on renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement, which Trump has long decried as unfair to the U.S. and in need of reformation, if it is not scrapped altogether.
“The issue of the wall was not discussed, it was not part of the conversation,” Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray stated, according to CNN.
Videgaray reiterated that the bulk of the discussion revolved around renegotiating NAFTA, noting that Mexico and the U.S. have a “complex relationship with many, many issues.”
Trump also made clear that much of the conversation was in regard to NAFTA, as well as “some other things with Mexico.” He maintained that he felt that “very good progress” was made between himself and Nieto in their discussion.
Of course, various current and former members of the Mexican government have attempted to make it as clear as possible that they have no intentions whatsoever of paying for Trump’s wall, but in spite of those repeated protestations to the contrary, Trump has remained ever-committed to his oft-stated campaign promise that America’s neighbor to the south would be covering the costs of securing the border.
This reporter may have thought she could catch Trump off guard or unaware and catch him admitting that he had drawn back from his promise to make Mexico pay for the wall, but that wasn’t happening today. Trump made it “absolutely” clear who was still on the hook for the final bill.
