On Monday, President Donald Trump invited three U.S. Marine Corps Navajo code talkers to the White House to honor their service during World War II.
One Navajo veteran gave remarks at the podium about the rich history of their units and then handed the mic over to Trump. That’s when things got fun.
Trump praised their service, citing Gen. John Kelly’s remarks about how much they had done for the country, and then he decided to throw in a joke about Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).
“You were here long before any of us were here,” he said. “Although we have a representative in Congress who they say was here a long time ago. They call her Pocahontas. But you know what? I like you.”
This comment instantly sparked debate, and Warren quickly responded, saying that “it is unfortunate that the president of the United States cannot even make it through a ceremony honoring these heroes without having to throw out a racial slur.”
Well, now one of the Navajo code talkers who was at the ceremony has responded, and it’s not going to make Warren too happy. Joshua Green, a CNN political analyst, met Thomas Begay at the airport and asked him about the “Pocahontas” comment.
Begay said he was “puzzled” but not offended by Trump’s remarks and said:
“The Marines made us yell ‘Geronimo’ when we jumped out of planes and that didn’t offend me either.”
