Meeting a celebrity can be a thrilling experience, but it’s important to remember that they’re people, too, just like us. Some of them just have exceptional talents.
Whether they’re a famous athlete or television star, more than likely they’ll be recognized when they step out in public and immediately have fans flocking to them.
One mother and her 11-year-old son were lucky enough to notice NFL superstar Aaron Rodgers waiting to cross the street with them in downtown Chicago. Rodgers, who is quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, was in town for the Packers-Bears game on Sunday night.
The mom, Julia Nicoll, wouldn’t have noticed Rodgers if it wasn’t for her son, Peter.
She said, “I’m whispering to him like (in a doubting tone), ‘Really? I don’t think Aaron Rodgers is standing right next to us on the corner on a Saturday evening.’” But she checked with a quick glance to the side and was, indeed, proved wrong.
Like many of us, has always worried about bugging them when spotted out in public. But this time she leaned forward and whispered, “Are you…?”
She was kind enough not to finish the sentence so she wouldn’t trigger any strangers’ ears. He didn’t even hesitate before responding.
“He looked right at me and said, ‘I am.’” Before she had any time to compose herself, he turned around and introduced himself to her and Peter.
He said he was out enjoying the energy of the city before his dinner reservations. He even talked with them for a few minutes about his collar bone injury and asked Peter all sorts of questions related to sports.
The little boy apologized to the Packers star for being a Bears fan. Rodgers gracefully said he should be a Bears fan, after all, he lived in Chicago.
The mom and son excused themselves when a group of fans came to ask for pictures. But what surprised them most was when Rodgers caught back up with them to continue the conversation.
“He just started talking to us again like we were all neighbors and friends. We walked with him again for the next 15 minutes, 20 minutes to Michigan Avenue,” she said.
“He was asking me questions that most people would think, ‘Why would Aaron Rodgers care?’ It was so amazing. It was really something, I have to say. It still is,” said Julia. “I told so many people. We just couldn’t believe it, my son and I.”
Julia felt compelled to share her experience, because who wouldn’t? The woman, however, seemed less impressed than others did.
“She kind of patted my arm in a sweet, sweet way and she goes, ‘Oh, my son plays for the Packers.’”
Her son happened to be Ty Montgomery, the Packers running back. Julia and Peter had quite the night of encountering notable people.
“I’m sharing with the world what a fabulous human being Aaron Rodgers is,” added Julia.
Certainly a nice change-up hearing uplifting stories about athletes encounters with fans. Have you ever had an unforgettable encounter with a celebrity?
