Just about everybody — at least anyone with common sense — understands the potentially fatal danger of leaving animals or small children inside of a locked vehicle on a hot summer day.
According to the Tribunist, a Canadian mother who was apparently ignorant of those dangers received a stern talking-to from a concerned police officer after authorities were called when she left two young children in her parked car while she shopped for groceries.
Numerous people called the Vancouver Police Department to report a vehicle in a grocery store parking lot that had a blaring car alarm going off and contained two distressed children, a 6-year-old girl and 3-year-old boy.
When the mother finally came out of the store after about 20 minutes and approached the vehicle, she was confronted by the officer who scolder her on the obvious danger she had placed her children in.
See part of the interaction in the video below:
“Do you understand what you’ve done? Your children could have died,” the officer declared in no uncertain terms.
The mother attempted to speak but was stopped by the officer. “No, you don’t seem to understand the danger you’ve put these children into,” he said.
“Listen to me. You’re talking when you should be listening,” he continued. “Your children could have died. The windows were up, it’s hot out.”
When the woman attempted to interrupt the cop again, he asked, “Why are you arguing? Do you want me to seize your kids and you’ll never see them again?”
Though the high that day was reportedly only about 70 degrees, temperatures inside of an enclosed vehicle sitting in direct sunlight with no air running can easily — and quite rapidly — climb much, much higher than the ambient temperature outside.
During a news conference later in the day on a separate matter, Vancouver Police Chief Adam Palmer was asked about the incident. He heaped praise upon the “hard-working, dedicated officer” that he further described as a “highly respected member of the police department” who was simply trying to explain the “gravity of the situation” to the mother of the two young children.
“I know that he has children of his own and you have to remember that police officers are just people,” Palmer stated. “We’re all human beings and everyone may react slightly differently to every set of circumstances and he was trying to convey to the woman the seriousness of what she’d done to the children.”
It is unlikely that the woman will face any sort of criminal charges over the incident, but the Ministry of Children and Family Development was notified and will be conducting their own investigation of the matter.
Seriously folks, don’t lock small children, or any animals for that matter, inside of a vehicle with no A/C running on a warm day, as it is akin to locking them inside of an oven set to slow roast.
This Canadian mother is fortunate nothing happened to her kids and the cop was willing to let her go with nothing more than a stern warning.
