After a weekend of complete chaos surrounding the national anthem protests in the NFL, many celebrities have come out either in support of or in opposition to the players’ decisions. NBA players including Steph Curry and LeBron James have weighed in on the situation, but there’s one NBA legend who just broke his silence on the issue.
Michael Jordan was completely silent on political issues and refused to take a stance on anything political all the way up until 2016 when he condemned police brutality against African-Americans. Now, Jordan is taking aim at the issue of NFL players protesting the national anthem.
It all started when Curry made comments about Donald Trump’s remarks regarding those who choose to take a knee that led Trump to tweet the following:
Going to the White House is considered a great honor for a championship team.Stephen Curry is hesitating, therefore invitation is withdrawn!

LeBron James responded:
He expanded on Trump’s comments with a video:

Now Jordan is taking aim at the issue by picking a side. On Sunday night, he said:
“One of the fundamental rights this country is founded on was freedom of speech, and we have a long tradition of nonviolent, peaceful protest. Those who exercise the right to peacefully express themselves should not be demonized or ostracized.
At a time of increasing divisiveness and hate in this country, we should be looking for ways to work together and support each other and not create more division.
I support Commissioner Adam Silver, the NBA, its players and all those who wish to exercise their right to free speech.”
People weren’t too happy with his comments:
When is Jordan father balky going to visit the swear shops in Indonesia that crack out his Nike basketball shoes!? Make something of ur life

Jordan is sick..the players are increasingly becoming anti American..A disgrace to the sacrifice patriots put up in raising the flag

Screw him and his disingenuous #TakesAKnee morons. Demonizing America shouldn’t be normalized and won’t be tolerated.

It will be interesting to see what happens with national anthem protests in the upcoming NBA season following comments from the most popular players in support of peaceful protests.
