Four weeks after the shooting of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise inspired calls for a less violent tone in American politics, a Maine lawmaker has publicly used language implying a physical threat against President Donald Trump.
“Trump is a half term president, at most, especially if I ever get within 10 feet of that p—y,” Democratic state Rep. Scott Hamann posted on Facebook in the closing section of a long rant against Trump and his supporters.
“He’s an admitted rapist,” Hamann wrote.
“Would you be okay with leaving him alone in a room with your wife?”
In the post, Hamann claims that Trump was “installed by the Russians.”
He also belittled Trump supporters, accusing them of receiving their news from only conservative sources.
“Don’t like the truth?” he asked. “Well then f— you, snowflake. You’re a f—ing p—y. And you people are destroying America.”
Hamann wrote that “100% of intelligent Americans agree that Trump is a complete loser. But go back to clinging to your guns because you’re afraid.”
The Democrat apologized for his remarks Wednesday.
“This is not language I typically use, it does not reflect my personal values and, while misguided, it was intended to make a visceral point about the devolving political discourse in America,” Hamann said.
However, the chair of the Maine Republican Party said action is needed after Hamann’s post.
“Words cannot even begin to describe the level of revulsion I feel after reading Representative Scott Hamann’s recent tirade that has come to light,” Demi Kouzounas said in a statement.
“Perhaps the most alarming aspect of this tirade is an implied death threat against our President,” Kouzounas said, calling the post “unhinged and dangerous.”
