These pictures don’t lie.
The Thursday Night Football game between the Los Angeles Rams visiting the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium might have boasted a paid attendance of almost 70,000, but a series of images published on social media by sports reporters on the scene showed that that actual attendance was a lot lower than that.
And we can all guess why. (The name Colin Kaepernick, a former 49er, might have something to do with it.)
Los Angeles Times reporter Lindsey Thiry set the tone with a kickoff time tweet that showed just how pathetic the early turnout was.
A college program that couldn’t fill seats that fast wouldn’t be in business long.
ESPN’s Darren Rovell checked in too.
Being an ESPN guy, he had some reasons for the turnout that didn’t have anything to do with politics and national anthem protests, but the elephant in the room isn’t going anywhere.
And lest anyone think it was rush hour traffic or late work that kept the football “fans” from turning out for the fun, KNTV sports reporter Colin Resch posted a picture from just before halftime.
Now, there’s no doubt that there are other factors at play here – the 49ers really are lousy, 5:30 p.m. is a tough time to start any weekday event and so forth – but there’s even less doubt that fan distaste for the NFL’s pampered social justice warriors protesting the national anthem is starting to take its toll.
But it isn’t just the anthem. A good part of the country still hasn’t forgotten superstar Beyonce’s disgraceful use of the Super Bowl halftime show in 2016 to push the Black Lives Matter lies that American cops are racists killers. The NFL is wearing awfully thin these days.
Twitter users following the journalists at the game sure knew what was going on.
And that says it all.
Baseball still claims to be the national pastime, but the National Football League long ago claimed the title of national passion.
With high-powered stars on the field, Fantasy Football gambling action powering its popularity, and the annual glamour of the national holiday called the Super Bowl, the NFL’s domination of the American entertainment world was complete.
Until the liberals got involved.
After a season scarred by utterly inane controversies sparked by spoiled superstars sitting down – or kneeling – for “The Star-Spangled Banner,” even die-hard sports fans are sick of it. It’s not just in the stadiums either. TV ratings are low again this year, just like they were last season, according CNN Money.
Last season, the NFL honchos blamed the presidential election for the ratings plunge. (They never mentioned Beyonce.) What’s there to blame this year? Hurricanes? “Game of Thrones”?
No one would have ever thought it possible, but the pampered millionaires of the NFL, and the liberalism that’s infected too many of them, could well be killing the national passion.
Because pictures like these don’t lie.
