After ESPN’s Jemele Hill accused President Donald Trump of being a “white supremacist” and the network responded by calling her remarks “inappropriate,” they have been getting skewered on all sides.
People on the right are outraged about the dangerous and inflammatory comments that Hill made about Trump and about ESPN’s tepid and hypocritical response.
People on the left are outraged that ESPN dared to publicly admonish Hill over her tweets, claiming she is being “silenced.”
Lost amid the chaos, however, was a not-so-subtle tweet from NFL free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
We are with you @jemelehill ✊🏾

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is the exact reason Kaepernick is jobless right now after opting out of his contract with the 49ers.
After watching Week 1 of the NFL season, Kaepernick is, for all intents and purposes, a more functional NFL quarterback than Indianapolis backup Scott Tolzien.
The difference between the two? Tolzien has never tacitly implied or supported the notion that the president of the United States is a white supremacist. Tolzien is a terrible NFL quarterback, but he doesn’t divide the locker room. He doesn’t draw copious amounts of negative national attention. He doesn’t alienate a sizable chunk of the fan base.
It’s mind-blowing that this even needs to be said, but you want those things from a backup quarterback. Backup quarterbacks are meant to be seen and not heard.
The level of distraction a sports team is willing to put up with from a player is directly commensurate to his or her talent. A backup quarterback who uses inflammatory rhetoric that can damage team chemistry simply isn’t worth it.
Some would say Kaepernick forfeited his right to criticize Trump. The United States is a representative democracy that grants its citizens the ultimate power to elect their leaders. Kaepernick never voted.
If he doesn’t care enough to vote, why does he care enough to hurl vile accusations at a president?
For attention. And that’s one trait no backup quarterback ever needs.
