In a move that has sent shock waves through the entertainment industry, comic Jimmy Fallon stated that — unlike a number of talk show hosts in similar positions — he will not allow his program to constantly criticize President Donald Trump.
According to an interview he gave to The New York Times, the “Tonight Show” host does not want to alienate his audience.
Trump jokes and all-around bashing of the president have become a nightly signature of such programs as “The Colbert Report” and “The Daily Show.” However, Fallon refuses to follow suit, explaining “people that voted for Trump watch my show as well.”
“I don’t want to be bullied into not being me, and not doing what I think is funny,” he said. “Just because some people bash me on Twitter, it’s not going to change my humor or my show.”
The comic is determined to keep his show light and not overly political, despite coming under fire back in September for interviewing then-candidate Trump. Some viewers claim Fallon was too congenial towards the future president, especially after he played with Trump’s hair.
“I’m a people pleaser,” he told The Times. “If there’s one bad thing on Twitter about me, it will make me upset. So, after this happened, I was devastated. I didn’t mean anything by it. I was just trying to have fun.”
Fallon’s refusal to make his show more left-wing is both refreshing and stunning. Hollywood is known for being left-leaning. Just a few months ago actress Meryl Streep used her acceptance speech for a lifetime award to bash Trump instead of reflecting on her career.
However Fallon won’t give in, not wanting to turn off the show’s viewers.
“It’s not ‘The Jimmy Fallon Show.’ It’s ‘The Tonight Show,’” he added.
