Heartsick over the widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Maria on the island of Puerto Rico, superstar Jennifer Lopez has stepped up to help. At a press conference on Sept. 24 in New York, Lopez explained exactly how she intends to bring relief to the people of Puerto Rico.
Lopez announced that she personally will be donating $1 million dollars of her Las Vegas concert proceeds to Puerto Rico. The ravaged island hits close to home for Lopez, who has family on the island that she still has not heard from.
Lopez has urged Americans to do what they can to help with relief efforts. On Sunday, Lopez proved that she is leading the way with her generous actions.

“Puerto Ricans are American citizens, and today Puerto Rico needs our help,” Lopez said at the press conference. “Hurricane Maria has devastated our island.”
Lopez is working closely with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and a slew of celebrities, including her boyfriend Alex Rodriguez and Mark Cuban, to broaden their relief efforts. “Alex Rodriguez and I, who are both New Yorkers, are using all our resources and relationships in entertainment, sports and business to garner support for Puerto Rico and the Caribbean,” Lopez stated.
In addition to her monetary donation, Lopez made a second announcement. Two planes, chock-full of much-needed supplies and generators are waiting to fly to Puerto Rico, as soon as a flight to the island is attainable.
Currently, 100 percent of the island is without power. Hurricane Maria devastated the island with winds of 155 miles per hour when it hit on Sept. 20.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo also attended the press conference, speaking about New York’s commitment to bringing aid to the U.S. territory. “It’s very hard to get everything there, as we’re seeing now — trying to get things on planes and trying to get the logistics set up on the ground,” Cuomo stated.
Other organizations are stepping up to help, including JetBlue, who has committed $1 million to transport relief supplies. Sports teams, including the New York Yankees and the Mark-Cuban-owned Dallas Mavericks, have promised to help.
“I urge you to support and donate to the efforts of the first lady of Puerto Rico, Beatriz Rosselló,” Lopez continued. “Together, we can help rebuild our island and the Caribbean.”
Hats off to Lopez for using her celebrity platform to rally around Puerto Rico during this difficult time. She no doubt will continue to advocate for the hurricane victims in a land she holds so dear.
