Ivanka Trump may be a major figure in both her father’s White House and in public discourse, but the first daughter doesn’t “think politics is in my future.”
During a Monday interview with “Fox & Friends,” Ivanka said that in spite of her high profile in Washington, she tries “to stay out of politics.”
“I don’t profess to be a political savant,” Ivanka told host Ainsley Earhardt. She noted that while she doesn’t like getting involved with politics, she does pick her battles.
“I instead like to focus on areas where I can add positive value, where I can contribute to the agenda,” Ivanka said.
“Policies around workforce development, around ensuring that barriers are removed from around the working family. Policies that enable that family to survive. Focusing on how we can help our veterans — and how we can really deliver them the care that they so need. Focusing on issues related to the really devastating opioid problem we have in this country.”
Ivanka also responded to a report from Us Weekly chronicling her policy disagreements with her father, saying that while she diverges from The Donald on several issues, that’s a perfectly natural thing.
“We’re different people, there are areas we disagree on,” Ivanka told Fox News.
“I think it’s normal to not have 100 percent aligned viewpoints on every issue. That would be a very strange scenario. I don’t think anyone operates like that with a parent or in the context of an administration, and I think all different viewpoints being on the table is a positive thing.”
“He trusts me to be very candid with my opinion,” she added. “I don’t have a hidden agenda. I make it very clear where I stand on an issue.”
As for the reaction to Ivanka’s assertion that she doesn’t have a future in politics, Fox reporter Peter Doocy may have said it best: “Well, I’ve got news for her, it’s uh — she’s in it right now,” Doocy said.
While her capacity within her father’s White House may not be a traditional political role, her father is hardly a traditional politician. Whether or not she realizes it — and one would have to assume she does — Ivanka has become one of the president’s most valuable surrogates. Whether or not she wants to say it, she’s in politics.
That being said, for those who want Ivanka to run for political office, Monday’s interview was a clear sign that the first daughter isn’t interested. Who knows, though? Back in 2011, I seem to recall her father saying something similar about the presidency…
