Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Thomas Homan said that while he is not certain just how many illegal immigrants are in the country, that number could very well be higher than what some statistics indicate.
“Like everybody else, I see studies and reports, and 11-12 million is the steady number I’ve seen. Could it be higher? It probably could be,” Homan said at a White House news briefing Tuesday, The Daily Caller reported.
Homan said that no illegal immigrant should “be comfortable” after the executive orders President Donald Trump has put into place.
Trump’s message to those wishing to enter the country illegally is clear, as represented by a drop in border crossings.
Homan said the number of border crossings had reached a 17-year low in April, and attributed that significant drop to Trump.
Last month, The Daily Caller reported that from February through May in 2016, 188,000 people were caught attempting to illegally cross the border. During the same period in 2017, only 76,000 were caught. That’s an incredible impact.
The president’s executive orders not only impacted illegal immigrants but immigration officers as well. They “took the handcuffs off of officers,” Homan said. “Now they can enforce the laws enacted by Congress.”
“The executive orders could’ve been written in one sentence: ‘You are now allowed to enforce the law as written.’ There’s been a lot of people off the table. Now there’s no population off the table anymore,” he said.
“That,” he said, “is directly related to this president and his policies and executive orders.”
While Democrats would never admit it, Trump is following through on his promises to the American people — something they know very little about.
However, Homan’s latest illegal immigrant statistic proves we need Trump’s immigration policies just as much as ever.
