Heres Why Twitter Would Die Overnight if Trump Stopped Tweeting

Ever since Donald Trump began his run for the presidency, the left has been trying to force Twitter to shut down his account. We’ve even seen former CIA agent and liberal cause célèbre Valerie Plame start a crowdfunding effort to buy out the social media platform just so she could shut the president down.

However, that’s unlikely to happen — if just because a new report reveals the president’s tweets are worth so much to Twitter that the social media giant would likely collapse without them.

As Bloomberg reported back in August, Monness Crespi Hardt & Co. analyst James Cakmak says that @realDonaldTrump’s tweets are worth $2 billion to the social media giant — a whopping one-fifth of the company’s value.

The president has 36 million followers on the platform and is a notoriously prolific tweeter.

“There is no better free advertising in the world than the president of the United States,” Cakmak says.

However, while the platform’s relevancy has gone up in the political sphere because of the president, its overall relevance as a social media giant is fading. It’s fallen well behind Facebook in terms of number of users, user growth, and the amount of time spent on the service. Smaller social media platforms like Snapchat, Pinterest and Instagram have chipped away at its user base growth, too. In July, Twitter reported a decline in user base from 70 million to 68 million. Its shares are less than one-third what they were back at their height in 2014.

No matter how liberal Twitter may be, President Trump’s tweets are a necessity for their survival. Reduced relevance and a reduced user base means reduced ad revenue — and if Trump leaves, so do a lot of users.

Cakmak noted that as long as Trump stays tweeting, Twitter has little likelihood of experiencing “potential diminishing political relevancy.”

“What’s most important is the execution of the right strategy, since at the present state we find Twitter not capitalizing on the opportunity that’s in front of them,” Cakmak noted.

So, sorry, Valerie Plame. If you do in fact come up with the money to buy Twitter — and, according to your GoFundMe page, you’re a little over $999,911,000 away from your $1,000,000,000 goal, which isn’t enough to buy it anyway, but whatever — you’ll end killing the platform pretty much overnight. And, rest assured, Trump and his followers will find a new place to bypass traditional media filters.
