Do they actually give awards at awards shows anymore? I’m really rather curious, since I don’t watch them and nearest I can tell from reports, these self-congratulatory soirees have turned into a sort of high-budget political rally where people are feted for saying exactly what everyone else in the room was thinking.
That long tradition continued Sunday at the Emmys, when anti-Trump Hollywood elitists wore blue ribbons to signify something I could have already assumed — namely, that they supported the ACLU.
The blue ribbons, according to USA Today, were a “subtle political accessory” (which was rather unsubtly publicized) for stars like Mandy Patinkin, Kathryn Hahn, Judith Light and Padma Lakshmi to show that they stood with the ACLU, an organization that curiously became more popular to support once President Donald Trump took office.
Perhaps most telling was the media’s reaction to these stars donning the ribbons.
“For those unfamiliar with the ACLU, the non-partisan, non-profit organization has been working tirelessly fornearly (sic) 100 years to defend and protect individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and law of the U.S.,” E! Entertainment noted.
Not only is that demonstrably wrong — as Breitbart notes, the ACLU has actually filed lawsuits to prevent the government from enforcing federal immigration law — it’s telling how uncritically the obviously-partisan ACLU is treated in the media. See if you can picture this sentence ever appearing in a similar article: “Focus on the Family is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that encourages values and focusing on one’s family.” Yeah, me neither.
OK, but that’s E! Entertainment. What about more sober sources of information? Quoth USA Today on the ACLU: “a nonpartisan and nonprofit organization that aims to defend and protect individual rights and liberties.” Right.
It’s worth pointing out that this isn’t the first time these blue ribbons have been trotted out. The Oscars and Tonys also saw a waste of perfectly good ribbon devoted to making sure people knew they stood with the ACLU’s liberal agenda. Thus, the novelty has worn off and the only real reason to report on this ridiculousness is “OMG look how socially aware these celebrities are!”
Personally, I think wearing a ribbon is the easiest way to broadcast that you know nothing about an issue or an organization but want to be seen as being in league with it. In this way, the blue ribbons did their job perfectly. If Hollywood thinks that their self-indulgent politicizing Sunday endeared the ACLU to any of its ideological opponents, however, one gets the feeling they’re going to be awfully disappointed.
