A New York congressman has proposed a national law that would prohibit gun-grabbers from enacting anti-Second Amendment legislation that would ban “assault weapons” and ammunition magazines that exceed a certain number of rounds, WKBW-TV reports.
Rep. Chris Collins, a Republican who represents the 27th district in the ultra-blue Empire State, says his SAGA Act would repeal his home state’s SAFE Act, a gun-grabbing measure enacted by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the New York state legislature. He plans to introduce the act in the House of Representatives shortly.
“The Second Amendment Guarantee Act (SAGA) would prevent states from implementing any regulations on these weapons that are more restrictive than what is required by federal law,” a news release from Collins’ office reads.
“Under this legislation, any current or future laws enacted by a state or political subdivision that exceeds federal law for rifles and shotguns would be void,” the news release said. “Should a state violate this law, and a plaintiff goes to court, the court will award the prevailing plaintiff a reasonable attorney’s fee in addition to any other damages.”
The news release also notes that Collins means “rifle or shotgun” to “(include) any part of the weapon including any detachable magazine or ammunition feeding device and any type of pistol grip or stock design.”
“This legislation would protect the Second Amendment rights of New Yorkers that were unjustly taken away by Andrew Cuomo,” Collins is quoted as saying.
“I am a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment and have fought against all efforts to condemn these rights. I stand with the law-abiding citizens of this state that have been outraged by the SAFE Act and voice my commitment to roll back these regulations.”
In a statement, Cuomo was obviously in snit over the proposal, which no doubt has other liberals furious.
“Now, in a blatant political ploy, Chris Collins is turning his back on New Yorkers and putting millions of people at profound risk. By fighting to roll back vital legislation that protects the people of the Empire State, Collins is demonstrating once again that he is beholden to no one but the gun lobby and entrenched special interests,” the statement said.
Considering the Democrat Party is nothing but a collection of special interests, gender-baiting and identity politics hustlers, Cuomo’s statement is hard to credit. But considering he’s reportedly eyeing a run for the presidency in 2020, the attack on gun grabbers in his own state by one of his state’s federal lawmakers has to be particularly galling.
Collins’ fellow New York Republican Rep. Tom Reed, however, was tentatively supportive of the SAGA Act, although he noted he had yet to see it.
“If the bill is as described, I can see us being very supportive of it,” Reed said, according to the Buffalo News.
And, indeed, most Republicans would likely be. It would stop gun-grabbers in their tracks if they decided to focus on the individual states. That’s great news for Second Amendment supporters — and horrible news for blue-state liberals. And given that Republicans are in charge of both the House and the Senate, it has a very good chance of becoming law
