Unbeknownst to most Americans, the William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum in Little Rock, Arkansas, contains a lavish rooftop garden designed to offer former President Bill Clinton some much undeserved R&R — and American taxpayer dollars are helping to maintain it.
“This is just an area he can come and relax in and just enjoy the view,” Clinton Foundation facilities and operations director Debbie Shock told the Associated Press back in 2007, the year this unseemly indulgence was erected.
How quaint …
Take a look at an aerial snapshot of the garden in the picture below, courtesy Zero Hedge:
If the garden itself seems like an imperial extravagance, wait until you learn about the penthouse it contains.
As noted by the New York Post, within the garden lies a “5,000-square-foot private residence that is strictly off limits to the public.”
Moreover, tabloid columnist and book author Ed Klein has repeatedly claimed the ex-president invites women to the penthouse to share glasses of red wine, give him massages and possibly more. To be clear, these are unconfirmed allegations at best.
The library also features an upscale restaurant called Forty-Two that serves burgers for $10. Peachy.
All that would be fine if it wasn’t costing the taxpayers a dime. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.
“While presidential libraries are designed and built almost entirely with private donations, they are then handed over to the National Archives and Records Administration to oversee,” the Chicago Tribune reported three years ago.
In 2013 alone taxpayers forked over $68 million to maintain the nation’s current batch of presidential libraries. It’s no wonder so many believe these libraries amount to a blatant waste of money.
“In the last 60 years, the cost of building and maintaining presidential libraries has increased in ways that Presidents Roosevelt and Truman, who established the first libraries, never imagined,” wrote Maine lawyer Severin M. Beliveau in a piece earlier this year for the Portland Press Herald.
“At a time when we are dealing with historical deficits and government spending is under increased scrutiny, we should end this taxpayer subsidy,” Beliveau added. “End the cult of imperial presidents. End the unseemly fundraising. End the system of presidential libraries.”
Agreed. And frankly, we should start by cutting all funding to the Clinton Library, because American taxpayers deserve better than to be forced to fund Bill Clinton’s salacious lifestyle.
