Fox Sports co-host Shannon Sharpe recently lost it on the air during a discussion about football players who choose to protest during “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
On Friday’s episode of “Undisputed,” Sharpe went off on a rant about the flag — calling it a “piece of cloth” that “nobody fights for.”
Sharpe, the former tight end who played for the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens, explained how he knew it was a symbol of patriotism, but then asked what the symbol actually meant.
That’s the first sign that he might not have a clue about what he was attempting to discuss.
“[Y]ou keep telling me that the flag means so much and it’s opportunity and freedom and liberty. OK. Can you honestly say that everybody in America has freedom and liberties and opportunity,” he asked.
Then the former NFL player really went off the deep end.
“[W]e know what the anthem was originally written for and who it was written by, OK?” he said.
“When did this narrative come to be that the military and the police own the flag and only them?” he continued. “I can go buy a flag and I can hang it up in my backyard. We need to stop this, Skip … the flag is a piece of cloth and nobody fights for a piece of cloth.”
What needs to stop is Sharpe’s mouth.
No one said the flag belonged to the military or the policemen, but those groups of people happen to be the ones who risk their lives so people like Sharpe can enjoy the freedom of talking trash way too much.
Take a look at the video, but beware, it’s hard to stomach:
Sharpe seems to be drinking the same Kool-Aid that pampered athletes who complain about oppression American are drinking.
It might be time to boycott Sharpe and his big mouth.
