An outspoken Fox Business host suggested Thursday that perhaps the Trump administration should consider resolving the North Korean debacle by simply assassinating unhinged dictator Kim Jong Un.
“There’s one other option here that we haven’t talked about,” host Trish Regan began with apparent reluctance during an appearance on sister network Fox News’ “Outnumbered.”
“I know you’re not supposed to … take out a leader because of international rules, decorum, et cetera, that we have. But if there is a way to get in and get rid of this crazy fat kid … then wouldn’t that do a lot in terms of saving a lot of lives here?”
Perhaps so, but perhaps not.
Any assassination of Kim would open up a power vacuum that might be filled by another prominent figure in the rogue regime. And according to Daniel R. DePetris, an analyst at the Wikistrat geostrategic consulting firm, there’s no stopping Kim’s replacement from being just “as vicious or unpredictable” as he is, if not worse.
Now imagine this: The U.S. kills Kim, an equally unhinged official (perhaps even one of his relatives) takes over and then the new leader sets out to get revenge. What then?
“Unlike Iraq, whose military was demoralized and degraded by the Persian Gulf War in 1991 and by a sanctions regime over the next decade, North Korea is a nuclear-weapons state with ballistic missiles that have the capability to level Seoul quickly and target U.S. bases in the region,” DePetris wrote for The National Interest.
That doesn’t sound good. But what if the administration killed Kim indirectly — like by encouraging a palace revolt where some saner head of state might emerge?
Inspiring the North Korean people to revolt against their tyrannical leader would indeed be nice, though much like Regan’s assassination idea, it’s much easier said than done.
The fact is that dealing with Kim won’t be easy no matter what option the administration inevitably chooses.
