In the wake of a new video released by the son of Osama bin Laden, a retired FBI investigator is warning America that it has not heard the last from al-Qaeda or the bin Laden family.
“We shall continue to target you until you withdraw your forces from the Arabian Peninsula and from every single land of Islam,” Hamza bin Laden, 28, said in the new video.
Ali Soufan, who was the top FBI investigator into the al-Qaeda terrorist network in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, said Hamza bin Laden is out for revenge.
“He’s basically saying, ‘America and American people, we’re coming and you’re gonna feel it. And we’re gonna take revenge for what you did to my father. We’re gonna revenge what you did in Iraq. We’re gonna revenge what you did in Afghanistan,’” said Soufan, who spoke Sunday on 60 Minutes.
Soufan said that six years after bin-Laden’s father was killed, al-Qaeda is “stronger than ever.”
“I don’t believe even [Osama] bin Laden in his wildest dreams thought that he will have followers who command armies, troops…lands,” Soufan said.
“We killed Osama bin Laden. But his message lives,” he said. “I think we’re not done with the bin Ladens yet.”
Last week, Hamza bin Laden issued a video calling upon his followers to launch suicide missions.
In an Arabic-language video with English subtitles, Hamza bin Laden says, “This is advice for anyone who intends to carry out a martyrdom operation. Be perfect in your choice of targets, so that you may damage your enemies more.”
“If you are able to pick a firearm, well and good; if not, the options are many,” he said, adding, “Take lead in inflicting losses, attacking the jugular of the enemy and hitting its joints.”
Soufan said Hamza bin Laden has long been recognized as a threat.
“He was that kid exhibited leadership skills early on,” Soufan said, noting that the FBI has marked him a “specially designated global terrorist,” the same designation as his father.
“In a way, he was a poster kid for al-Qaeda. They featured him in so many of their propaganda. And for members of al-Qaeda who were indoctrinated with these propaganda videos he means a lot to them,” Soufan said.
Soufan said that the son carries on his father’s approach.
“Interestingly enough, his recent message that came out, he delivered the speech as if it’s his father delivering the speech, using sentences, terminology that was used by Osama bin Laden,” Soufan said.
“The whole thing was about vengeance. He wants to avenge his dad,” he added.
