Anyone who listens to syndicated radio is probably familiar with at least the voice of Delilah. With an estimated 8 million listeners, this long-time radio host gives encouragement to listeners who call her with their requests.

Delilah tells people, “I love sharing my life with you as much as I love hearing about yours.” Many times she will listen to someone’s story and then choose the song she feels best speaks to their situation.

What we all too often fail to realize though, is Delilah, and others who publically help people with their problems such as Dr. Phil, have lives of their own. They face the same day-to-day realities the rest of us do.

Delilah is the mother of 13 children. Her huge brood of kids is relatively unknown to her fans.

Now, instead of Delilah soothing the emotions of a distraught caller, she is in need of the same type of comfort she regularly doles out. Life has dealt her a bad hand.

One of her children, Zachariah, recently died by suicide. “He was being treated, counseled, and embraced fiercely by family and friends while battling depression for some time now,” she said of her now-deceased child.

There are over 1 million recorded suicides per year, but when they hit as close to home as Delilah’s son, just one of them is enough to destroy the emotional well-being of the people left behind to mourn their loss. Questions go unanswered, and though often unwarranted, feelings of guilt relentlessly invade their psyche.

Delilah said her heart is broken beyond repair and she cannot fathom how to go on. She also believes her son is at peace and is resting with the Lord.

Ten of Delilah’s 13 children are adopted. She lost another child, Sammy, in 2012 from sickle cell anemia.

If you are a fan of Delilah’s and have called her show concerning whatever was on your mind at the time, please remember there are sometimes people who are going through worse things than you are. This is a classic example.

Delilah will be taking an “indefinite break from radio.” She will also be absent “on social media for a time as [she grieves and tries] to process this loss with [her] family.”

Just as many people are experiencing, or have experienced, an insurmountable tragedy in their life, being famous does not exempt radio, television, or movie personalities from what life is going to do. Good, or bad.

However, the strength Delilah is showing in the face of despair should be an example for all of us to follow. While this is one of the most difficult challenges she has ever had to face, life for Delilah goes on.
