Field At Ft Bragg Is Lined With 7k Combat Boots Paying Tribute to Fallen Troops

On Memorial Day, millions of Americans remember our military men and women who sacrificed their lives so that we can be free and secure.

Unlike Veterans Day, which honors those who served and made it home, Memorial Day is set aside in remembrance of those who paid the ultimate price for freedom. All around the country, memorials are set up to honor the fallen.

One such memorial is displayed at Fort Bragg, in Fayetteville, North Carolina.  At the memorial, over 7,000 combat boots are lined up in rows to honor those who lost their lives, WTVT reported.

The combat boots represent those who died serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. This is the third year the memorial has been erected, courtesy of the efforts of Survivor Outreach Services.

The Fayetteville Observer reported that family members were invited to decorate the boots they send in. The volunteers who helped put together the display also decorated the boots and places a tag on each boot with the photo off the fallen solider, as well as information about where they served and when they died.

“That has been sad for me, knowing we lost so many,” said Charlotte Watson, the program manager of Fort Bragg’s survivor outreach group. “This is an opportunity to pay tribute to the sacrifice.”

The U.K. Daily Mail noted that Army veteran Mike Thomas has made it his mission to document each and every boot and send a photo of it to the family members of the fallen solider.

“They will be never forgotten as long as we speak their names and honor their lives,” Thomas explained.

It is truly humbling to remember so many have died defending America’s freedom.

On this Memorial Day, we remember it isn’t about the barbecues or the parties — it’s about remembering those who loved our country and its people and were willing to sacrifice their lives for the freedom we enjoy.

Today, we remember them.
