Not long after President Donald Trump’s former National Security Advisor Gen. Michael Flynn entered a guilty plea last week, experts are saying more may have gone on behind the scenes.
On Friday, Flynn pleaded guilty to “willfully and knowingly” making “false, fictitious and fraudulent statements” to the FBI about two discussions he had with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak in December of 2016.
The Nov. 30 plea deal is part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
The Guardian spoke with several experts about whether the language in Flynn’s plea agreement indicate that he may have worn a wire during conversations he had with Trump administration officials prior to his admission of guilt. If so, this may have been done under the direction and in cooperation with Mueller.
“Section eight of the deal reached by Donald Trump’s former national security adviser in the inquiry into Russian meddling in the US election is entitled ‘cooperation.’ It specifies that as well as answering questions and submitting to government-administered polygraph tests, Flynn’s cooperation ‘may include … participating in covert law enforcement activities,’” The Guardian reported.
The reported continued: “Long-time students of federal law enforcement practices agreed, speaking anonymously, that ‘covert law enforcement activities’ likely refers to the possibility of wearing a concealed wire or recording telephone conversations with other potential suspects. It is not known whether Flynn has worn a wire at any time.”
As noted by Zero Hedge, experts also took note of the fact that no one knows exactly when Flynn began cooperating with Mueller’s investigation.
Mueller’s agreement to reduce Flynn’s sentence may indicate that he provided a significant amount of evidence to the special counsel, which could have been obtained from conversations recorded with a wire.
“The main clue in the plea agreement about the importance of the information Flynn has already provided lies in the discrepancy between the maximum penalty for the crime he has admitted and the maximum sentence the special counsel has promised to recommend,” The Guardian reported.
Flynn’s plea deal indicates he faced up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. However, the deal he agreed to indicates that the “estimated sentencing guidelines” range from zero to six months, with the possibility of a fine between $500 and $9,500 if he cooperates with Mueller’s requests.
Experts said it was significant that Flynn pleaded guilty prior to being indicted by a grand jury, as it may show that Flynn chose to work with Mueller in exchange for not being publicly humiliated.
All things considered, the experts concluded that the phrasing of the plea deal strongly suggests Flynn wore a wire in his dealings with the Trump administration.
If those recordings do exist, they may vindicate Trump, who has maintained that no collusion took place with the Russians to win the 2016 presidential election.
All of this also comes on the heels of ABC News falsely reporting that President Trump had directed Flynn to speak to the Russians before the election.
That was a lie, and the liberal network is facing extreme backlash for its error.
Nevertheless, with Mueller’s wide-ranging powers, its unclear how far his investigation is willing to go. Just last week, one of his top investigators was fired for sending anti-Trump text messages, indicating the investigation has been shady and agenda-driven.
Mueller has yet to prove any collusion after nearly a year of investigating and people are growing tired of his covert campaign that some believe is aiming to derail Trump’s presidency.
It’s also quite notable that a few of Trump’s former officials have been indicted, yet Hillary Clinton and her cronies have gotten a free pass for years.
Nothing about this investigation has looked fair and independent.
