On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting this week, President Donald Trump sat down Thursday for bilateral talks with his South Korean counterpart, President Moon Jae-in, when he heard one particular word in Moon’s remarks that grabbed his attention and led to a welcome moment of levity amid the serious discussion.
Moon’s interpreter congratulated Trump on his “strong speech” to the U.N. and stated, “North Korea has continued to make provocations and this is extremely deplorable. And this has … this has angered both me and our people. But the United States has responded firmly and in a very good way.”
“Thank you very much, and I’m happy that you used the world ‘deplorable.’ I was very interested in that word,” a grinning Trump replied to laughter from the room, according to The Washington Post.
“I promise, I did not tell them to use that word,” Trump added to more laughter. “That’s been a very lucky word for me and many millions of people.”
Of course, who can forget failed Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton’s utterance of the phrase “basket of deplorables” during the campaign, which had been intended as a smear against both Trump and his millions of supporters.
Instead of serving as an insult, the “deplorable” term became something of a rallying cry and badge of honor.
The Chicago Tribune noted that it wasn’t just the South Korean president who delighted Trump with a certain word or phrase, but that several other world leaders adopted a “Trumpian” tone in their meetings with him.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani revealed how pleased he was with Trump’s “historic” decision to keep military troops in his country, and stated, “You made this decision on the basis of courage and determination. We salute your courage. It’s a difference of day and night,” as compared with the prior administration.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that of the “countless speeches” he has heard over the years at the U.N., “None were bolder, none were more courageous and forthright than the one delivered by President Trump today.”
Even Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas seemed to get in on the action following a discussion with Trump on the prospects of peace between Israel and his own people, and stated such an occurrence would be the “deal of the century in the Middle East.”
But remember, according to much of the mainstream media, Trump is wholly reviled by the entirety of the rest of the globe, has no idea what he is doing and is only making all of our problems worse — or something like that.
