Most of the headlines from President Donald Trump’s visit to the Middle East has centered on his speech Sunday in the Saudi capital of Riyadh. However, Trump made plenty of headlines during his visit, including a plaudit from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi that had the media’s jaws dropping.

“Mr. President, let me express our appreciation and respect,” el-Sisi said through a translator. “Let me say that you have a unique personality that is capable of doing the impossible.”

According to Reuters, the president — with typical Trumpian modesty — smiled and said, “I agree.”

The president returned the favor, saying that he and el-Sisi had “really been through a lot together positively.”

“I will get to Egypt. We will absolutely be putting that on the list very soon,” Trump added, saying that el-Sisi had “done a tremendous job under trying circumstance.”

Trump was referring to the chaos in Egypt following both the Arab Spring uprising that toppled strongman Hosni Mubarak in 2011 and the subsequent rule of the Muslim Brotherhood-backed Mohamed Morsi, who was deposed in 2013.

The Hill reported that Trump emphasized his support for el-Sisi in a statement released by the White House on Sunday.

According to the statement, Trump “emphasized his support for Egypt’s fight against terrorism and underscored the benefits of the longstanding military cooperation between the two countries” during the meeting.

“The President also encouraged deeper cooperation to address the root causes of terrorism and extremism and applauded President (el-Sisi’s) strong calls to reform ideologies that inspire violence,” it continued. “The United States and Egypt stand fully committed to addressing critical bilateral and international issues in a renewed spirit of mutual respect and open cooperation.”

Needless to say, the news media weren’t terribly impressed with this.

Check out CNN’s Jeremy Diamond, who called it “more of a buddy comedy routine” than a serious meeting:

Yes, to the wonderful people of CNN, this is what objectivity looks like. I don’t particularly remember Diamond speaking so censoriously when the erstwhile President Barack Obama spent a considerable chunk of one March afternoon unveiling his NCAA bracket while Mosul and Raqqa were mired in subhuman chaos. Maybe I just missed it.

What’s to be expected, though? After all, the slightest praise for Donald Trump from anyone in a position of influence is enough to send the left and its surrogates into paroxysms of contempt.

And sometimes, that’s half the fun.
