For decades, mailmen have encountered dogs along their route, and for many of them, it’s not a pleasant experience. However, one pup in New Zealand and the neighborhood mailman have formed a special bond that the dog’s owner caught on camera.
Michael Collins shared a sweet video on social media in July of last year showing how his mailman treated his giant 9-month-old canine with kindness, taking time to hug and rub on the pet even on days the family didn’t receive any mail.
“Everyday whether or not we have mail this mail man always stops to see my dog who is only 9 months old,” Collins wrote on Facebook.
Collins explained that his dog — which appeared to be a German shepherd or a similar breed — often gets looked at as “dangerous” or “unapproachable” because of his size, even though he is a gentle dog who doesn’t bark or growl at passersby.
“But this guy here always makes an effort to get off his bike to give him a hug and a pat!” Collins wrote about the mailman, whose name he did not know.
“(T)hanks man keep up the good job and you’ve definitely got a friend waiting for ya!!” he said.
Collins later told BuzzFeed that he has since spoken with the mailman and personally thanked him for treating his dog with kindness.
Unfortunately, we know that not every mailman has the same compassion for dogs, even those who pose no harm to them.
The two reportedly discussed how such a positive message found so much support on social media. With all the negativity on social media lately, it’s nice to see something so heartwarming. It’s also a great lesson about looking past outward appearances and being kind to others.
This mailman could have walked past this dog just like so many others had done, but instead, even when he didn’t have to, he stopped by the house to show the canine a little love and kindness. Imagine if Christian people took the same approach to lost souls who seem unapproachable or inconvenient. The world would be a much better place.
