In the wake of numerous killings targeting police officers around the nation these past few years, law enforcement officers have been feeling on edge and couldn’t be blamed for wondering if the American people even support them anymore.
The answer to that couldn’t be clearer, as thousands of Americans have stepped up to show police around the country that they support them in these difficult times.
WFTV-TV reported that one man in Florida showed this in an incredible way to a sheriff’s deputy at a gas station back in 2016.
Lake County sheriff’s deputy David Causey was filling up his car when he noticed an elderly man just standing behind his car, watching the area intently. This occurred only a few days after the Dallas massacre, so naturally Causey was concerned.
“I noticed this gentleman show up out of nowhere, standing behind my patrol car scanning the area (apparently better than I had been),” he wrote on Facebook.
When Causey was done, he approached the man. That’s when he learned that the man had been standing there to watch the officer’s back while he was preoccupied with filling up his car.
The elderly man said “Thank you sir for what you do. I have your back,” Causey wrote. “I just kind of just stood there in shock, that an elderly man was willing to possibly put himself in danger to help me, a complete stranger.”
The man then drove away without identifying himself. Causey did manage to get a picture of the man, who was later identified as 73-year-old Army veteran named Casey DeLoach.
Reportedly, DeLoach has been watch over officers at gas stations since 2015 when Texas deputy Darren Goforth was murdered at one.
People like DeLoach represent the best of America. Even though police are supposed to protect us, in dark times like these, the American people need to step up and return the favor.
