Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., blasted House Speaker Paul Ryan Tuesday, saying he “stripped” her Authorization for Use of Military Force repeal amendment in the “dead of night.”

In a series of tweets, Lee said the move was “underhanded and undemocratic” and argued that the American people deserve a debate on the issue.

“Ryan stripped my 01 AUMF repeal (amendment) from DOD Approps in the dead of night. This is underhanded and undemocratic. The people deserve a debate!” Lee tweeted.

“Ryan should be ashamed of himself for forcing Republicans to strip out my bipartisan AUMF amdt in the dead of night. What is he afraid of?” she added in another tweet minutes later.

The war authorization Lee was referring to was passed in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and gave the president the authority to use “appropriate force” against the terrorists responsible for the attacks.

That authorization, as well as another in 2002 to authorize the use of force in Iraq, have been used a combined 37 times since 2001 by Presidents Bush, Obama and Trump to “justify military action in 14 countries, including the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria,” according to The Hill.

Lee and Ryan spoke last week to discuss a new war authorization act to replace the 2001 legislation.

“Lee offered the amendment to the House Appropriations defense bill. Surprisingly, both Republicans and Democrats backed Lee’s argument, with the full committee eventually approving the amendment,” The Hill reported.

“GOP leadership, however, was not pleased. Ryan said the amendment was a ‘mistake’ in an interview with RealClearPolitics in late June,” The Hill added.

Lee has unsuccessfully pitched her war authorization measure five times since 2010, according to the New York Daily News.

Following a meeting she had with the House speaker last month, Lee said Ryan “did not commit to preserving this amendment in the Rules Committee.”
