On July 13, country singer and “American Idol” champion Scotty McCreery ran into a bit of unexpected trouble at Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina.
According to the The News & Observer, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees found a loaded handgun in the singer’s backpack after it showed up on an X-ray screen, which apparently was news to McCreery.
He explained to police that he had gone to a firing range before his flight and forgot the weapon was in his backpack. After an investigation was completed, McCreery was free to get on the next available flight. Despite the inconvenience of a missed flight, the country singer had nothing but praise for TSA.
“Unfortunately, I did not realize that I left my pistol in my backpack until the TSA found it during the security X-ray screening and rightly confiscated it,“ he told People in a statement. ”Great to know our airport security force is on the job. I have learned a lesson that I won’t forget.”
Since McCreery has a valid concealed carry permit, which he had on him at the time. The News & Observer reported he was only cited for a misdemeanor violation for trying to carry a firearm through an airport checkpoint and board a plane with it.
McCreery added that he takes “gun safety very seriously,” and became a concealed carry permit holder after he was robbed at gunpoint in 2014.
In addition to the handgun, People reported TSA agents also found two boxes of ammo that contained 63 bullets.
