Though President Donald Trump is referred to on a regular basis as a racist, former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski unequivocally stated Tuesday that this is not the case.
During an appearance on the ABC program “The View,” co-host Sunny Hostin asked Lewandowski about an excerpt from his new book.
“On Day 1 of his campaign, Trump came down that golden escalator and he called Mexicans rapists who bring drugs and crime to America,” she said.
“You wrote in your book that those words were as close to the opposite of racism as any words could be. Please Corey, explain that to me.”
Lewandowski responded by claiming that Hostin was taking Trump’s words completely out of context. He then explained that from his personal experiences with Trump, he is sure the president is not racist.
“I know President Trump. Not only is he not a racist or a misogynist, he is the exact opposite,” he said, as the crowd jeered. “Because you know what, I’ve had the privilege of sitting next to him. And he doesn’t care if you’re white, green, blue, honest, male or female.”
When then-candidate Trump announced his presidential run in June 2015, he came down hard on illegal immigration, noting that many of the people who enter the country illegally are criminals.
“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best,” he said. “They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”
Speaking to “The View” co-hosts, Lewandowski offered one tragic example of how a convicted criminal in the country illegally took the life of a young American.
“This week we had a terrible strategy of justice in my opinion. Kate Steinle’s killer, the man who killed her in cold blood, was let off because of an unjust justice system. He had been deported six times from this country,” he said.
“This girl died, a beautiful young girl in California was shot and killed. And you know what? It doesn’t matter if you’re white or black, green or orange, justice should have been brought for her family.”
He was referencing the 2015 death of 32-year-old Kate Steinle, who was shot and killed by Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, an illegal immigrant. Zarate claimed what happened was an accident, and the jury agreed, as he was acquitted Thursday of murder.
Lewandowski was on “The View” to promote his new book, “Let Trump Be Trump: The Inside Story of His Rise to the Presidency,” which he co-wrote with Trump’s deputy campaign manager, David Bossie.
But he also used the opportunity to defend Trump’s credentials, particularly saying that he appreciates Trump’s “killer” instinct.
“He’s a killer. I want a killer as a president. I want to make sure we are the toughest, greatest nation in the world and that we are safe,” he said, adding that Trump “is a man who has achieved so much success in his life.”
